Surgical Nursing

A surgical nurse is registered as a theatre nurse or scrub nurse, specializes in preoperative care, providing care to patients before, during and after surgery. To become the theatre nurse, Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses must complete extra training. There are many different phases during surgery where the theatre nurse is needed to support and assist the patient, surgeons, surgical technicians, nurse anaesthetists and nurse practitioners. Pre-operative, the nurse must help to prepare the patient and operating room for the surgery. During the surgery, they assist the anaesthetist and surgeons when they are needed. The last phase is post-operative, enduring that the patients are provided with suitable care and treatments.

Surgical Nursing is a specialty area of nursing which gives care to patients before and after surgery The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a specialty nursing organization dedicated to nurturing medical-surgical nurses. There are different kinds of surgical nurse, and surgical nursing as a profession is very demanding, they deal with surgical intervention, patient assessment.

 

According to the research done by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics they are expecting a growth of about 16% by 2014 – 2024 of job opportunities for  surgical nurses. The earning range between $78,220 and $96,299 from,  career growth as surgical nurse is much faster than other field of nursing.
